Annual Massachusetts Plate Lottery 2024 Has Begun!

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) recently announced that applications for the 2024 Low Number Plate Lottery are now being accepted using the myRMV Online Service Center.

Applying for a low number plate:

  • Applying for a Low Number Plate

    • From the myRMV Online Service Center, scroll down to the “Plates” section on the left side, and select the “Apply for Plate Lottery” button.
      • The 2024 RMV Low Plate Lottery begins on Monday, June 17, 2024 at 9:00 a.m.
      • The deadline to enter the 2024 Low Plate lottery is Friday, August 16, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.
      • There is no fee to apply to the lottery. However, winning applicants are responsible for standard license plates and registration fees.

    This year, there are 191 plates available through the low plate lottery, including plate numbers: 1999, 1100, 4004, and 4400.

2024 Low Plate Lottery Rules and Eligibility

Who Can Apply?

  • One Entry Per Person: Only one entry per applicant is allowed, regardless of how many active vehicle registrations you have.
  • Residency Requirements: You must be a Massachusetts resident with a currently active, registered, and insured passenger vehicle to participate.
  • No Companies Allowed: Businesses and corporations are not eligible to enter the lottery.
  • MassDOT Employees: If you work for MassDOT (including the Registry of Motor Vehicles, Highway, Mass Transit, and Aeronautics divisions) or have immediate family members who do, you cannot apply. This also includes those involved in managing MassDOT divisions.

Important Details:

  • No Plate Preferences: You cannot request specific plate numbers. All eligible applicants will be considered for all plates listed, and plates will be awarded in the order listed on Mass.Gov/RMV.
  • License & Registration Status: Your registration and license must be in good standing—meaning they cannot be in non-renewal, suspended, or revoked status—at the time of entry, during the drawing, and when swapping your plate. Additionally, you must not have any outstanding excise taxes, parking tickets, child support payments, warrants, or unpaid E-ZPass/Pay By Plate violations.

Deadlines and Notifications:

  • Entry Deadline: All online entries must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on August 16, 2024.
  • Winner Announcement: By law, the RMV must announce lottery winners by September 15, 2024. You can find the results on the RMV website: Mass.Gov/RMV.
  • Plate Transfer: If you win, the RMV will notify you in writing with instructions on how to transfer your current registration to your new lottery plate. You will have until December 31, 2024, to complete the plate swap. Any plates not claimed by December 31st will be forfeited and awarded to alternate winners.

  • Plate Ownership: Even after registration, all plates remain the property of the RMV.
  • Public Records: All information received, including the names of applicants and the list of winners, is subject to release under the Massachusetts Public Records Law.

  • A link to the lottery event will be made available leading up to the lottery. In addition, applicants will be sent a notification via email.
